Judith Brew has always lived and worked in West Cumbria other than during student days while gaining a degree in English and American Literature from Manchester University.
A career in local government initially working for Cockermouth RDC and then working towards the creation of Allerdale BC provided the opening into personnel work. Judith joined the newly formed personnel department at Allerdale and later went on to become the first Personnel Officer of Carlisle City Council.
Following a break at home with a young family (including a period of self employment running a small shop) Judith returned to personnel work with manufacturers Brannan Thermometers moving after 18 months to join the nuclear industry to work with UKAEA. This provided an enjoyable and challenging 15 years as the company transformed from government body to private company - AEA Technology plc working alongside technical managers and managing independently on the full range of personnel issues.
The business was divested to BNFL and Judith moved into general management working on transition issues and business support but after two years the pull of the HR world proved too strong and Judith left to set up business as a HR Consultant. Bowness HR Ltd is now heading for it’s fourth year of business and the initial aim of providing a practical, cost effective and accessible personnel service for small businesses has been realised.
